Chubby Checker tickets still available

By Sarah Fay Campbell

The Newnan Times-Herald

There are still tickets available for Sunday's intimate concert/ dance party with music legend Chubby Checker.

Checker, most famous for "The Twist," has chosen downtown Newnan, and The Alamo, as the setting for a Georgia celebration of the 50th anniversary of the song that got everybody twisting.

Checker had other hits, including "Let's Twist Again" and "Limbo Rock."

Tickets aren't cheap but benefit a good cause. Tickets are $75. Of that, $25 goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Newnan and is tax-deductible.

Tickets can be purchased at The Alamo or Fabiano's during business hours. Folks coming from out of town may call and reserve tickets.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Linda Kee, Newnan's director of business development and Main Street Newnan director. "This is not just a concert. This is an intimate evening with Chubby," she said.

"What makes it so cool is it's like going to your high school reunion or a sock hop with Chubby," she said. "We expect it to be more like a party."

Kee said she remembered, as a girl, doing The Twist with her parents.

"So to get to go see him and hang out with people in that atmosphere is going to be awesome," she said.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Sunday, and Checker is expected to take the stage around 8. A DJ will be playing 1950s and 1960s dance hits in the interim, Kee said.

Earlier on Sunday, Checker will be a special guest judge at the car show being held around the Court Square. The car show will run from 2 to 6 p.m., and all proceeds will benefit the local Adopt A Soldier program. Checker will choose his favorite car and will also be the judge of a Twist contest for the kids.

For more information on the car show, contact Jerry Cochran at 770-328-4763.
