Central Baptist on collectible 2009 ornament

By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

Central Baptist Church of Newnan is featured on the Christmas 2009 Main Street collectible ornaments now available at downtown locations.

It is the second pewter ornament released by Main Street in its newest series, with last year's ornament featuring the Carnegie Library. There are only 1,000 ornaments made each year, and they are never reordered, according to Linda Kee, director of Business Development and Main Street for the city of Newnan.

"We have had a very positive response from everyone who has seen these ornaments," said Kee. "After 15 years, it was time to start a new series. We had sold out of many of the old ones, so people could no longer get a complete set. This set will feature a different landmark each year and will make an excellent collector's item as well as a great gift."

The history of the church property is printed on the back of the ornament.

"Established in 1897, The Central Baptist Church is a historic landmark in downtown Newnan," it reads. "The beautiful stone building with a slate roof is known to be a house of God with open doors, open arms and an open heart. The inscription on the corner-stone reads, 'To bear witness unto the truth,' and that remains the goal over 100 years later."

The ornaments are available for $12 in many downtown stores, including Scott's Bookstore, Panoply, Morgan's Jewelers and R.S. Mann Jewelers.

Main Street invites the public to attend its Holiday Open House Sunday noon to 5 p.m. in downtown Newnan. There will be in-store specials and live entertainment. This year's commemorative ornament will be available in select stores.

Also, a few of the Carnegie ornaments remain, as well as a limited number of the "ball" ornaments from the previous series featuring renderings of local landmarks drawn by local artists. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of those, they can contact Main Street Coordinator Tina Darby at tdarby@cityofnewnan.org .
