Candidate qualifying begins in two weeks for municipal elections

Qualifying for municipal elections is just two weeks away.

Qualifying for offices in Newnan, Senoia, Grantville, Moreland, Turin, and Sharpsburg starts Aug. 31.

Candidates for seats in Moreland and Turin will qualify with Elections Superintendent Jane Scoggins at her offices in the basement of the Coweta Administration Building, 22 East Broad Street in downtown Newnan. Candidates for the other cities should qualify at their respective city halls.

To qualify, candidates must bring a photo ID and their qualifying fee. Candidates must be registered to vote at an address that meets the qualifications for their particular seat.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election is Oct. 5. Candidates who need to change their address or register to vote should do so at least one day before they intend to qualify for office.

In Sharpsburg, there will be four elections. Council member Polly Garlington will be resigning to run for mayor. A special election will be held for the two years remaining on her term, as well as for the two years left on the term of Mayor Derrick McElwaney, who will leave office at the end of 2009.

There will also be a Sharpsburg election for the council seats currently held by Keith Rhodes and Gordy Anderson. The council members elected to those two seats will serve four-year terms.

Sharpsburg qualifying will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 2. The qualifying fee is $50 for the mayor's seat and $25 for council.

In Newnan, qualifying will be held for the mayor's seat and for council wards B and E. Those seats are currently held by Mayor Keith Brady, and Councilmen Rhodes Shell and Ray Dubose.

Qualifying will run from 8:30 a.m. Monday to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The qualifying fee is $300 for the mayor's race and $165 for council.

In Senoia, the mayor's seat currently held by Mayor Robert Belisle and the council seats held by Councilmen Larry Owens and Jeff Fischer will be up for election. Fischer was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Keith Harrison.

The winners of the election will be Senoia's first-elected officials to serve four-year terms.

Qualifying will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 31 through Sept. 3, and 8:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 4. the qualifying fee is $300 for mayor and $165 for council.

In Grantville, qualifying will be held for the council seats currently held by Rochelle Jabaley and Nick Sasso.

Qualifying runs from 8:30 a.m. Aug. 31 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 4. The qualifying fee is $72.

Qualifying for Turin and Moreland will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 21 and Sept. 1, and 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 2.

In Turin, qualifying will be held for the mayor's race and the council seats currently held by George Harris and Armada Brack. The qualifying fee is $25.

In Moreland, qualifying will be held for the seats on the board of aldermen currently held by Jeff Burgess and Myron McLain. There will also be qualifying for a candidate to serve the remaining one year of the term of the late Jay Hurst.

The qualifying fee is $9.
