The Peachtree City man charged with fondling himself in front of a 5-month-old Thursday in Newnan's Barnes & Noble bookstore has been given bond.
Joseph Smirniotis, 50, was given a $25,000 bond on Friday, though he hadn't posted it by noon on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the Coweta County Jail. He is charged with child molestation and public indecency, according to Deputy Chief Rodney Riggs of the Newnan Police Department.
The incident occurred at the Barnes & Noble in Ashley Park around 2 p.m. on Thursday. The infant's mother was sitting near her child reading when she noticed the perpetrator -- later identified as Smirniotis -- standing over the child fondling his exposed genitalia, according to Riggs.
The mother screamed, getting the attention of other patrons and employees. The suspect fled the store, but witnesses followed him to his car and were able to get the tag number. Authorities placed a lookout for Smirniotis' vehicle, and he was arrested near Thomas Crossroads.
Riggs said the investigation is ongoing.
