Noah Biorkman's health is declining and his family has now asked people across the country to stop sending Christmas cards.
The 5-year-old suffers from neuroblastoma. Several treatments were tried in recent months to stop the cancer, but nothing has stopped the spread of the cancer.
Noah loves Christmas, and his family originally asked people to send Christmas cards to him early. The family celebrated the holiday -- having their "official" Christmas on Nov. 8.
The family no longer needs to deal with the influx of mail. "The outpouring of love and concern for Noah is just amazing," his mother, Diana Biorkman, wrote on a Web site maintained by the family. "Scott and I never in a million years thought that so many people would want to send Christmas cards to Noah."
More than 8,000 cards -- most of them from people who did not know the family -- had been received a few days ago. Individuals and groups in the Grantville and Haralson areas of Coweta County prepared cards for the boy.
"Please stop sending cards and gifts," Mrs. Biorkman wrote on the Web site.
"Noah is very ill. He is not getting out of bed, and it's time for Scott, our families, and I to concentrate on our son," she wrote, "His time is very short and he needs us."
The boy was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma in February 2007. He went into remission in August 2007.
Then in September of this year, Noah suffered a relapse -- with lesions in his right arm and right leg. Despite six different treatments, his cancer continues to spread. Neuroblastoma can cause tumors in many parts of the body and is most common in young children.
