Bids going out for new health department

By Jeff Bishop

The Times-Herald

Now that a $500,000 state grant has been approved for a new Coweta County health department building, bid documents are being sent out this week "so that everything can be ready to move forward," County Administrator Theron Gay told the Coweta Board of Health Tuesday afternoon.

The Coweta County Hospital Authority has agreed to chip in $1.5 million toward the new facility, Gay said, and Allen Smith Consulting is putting the whole grant administration package together. Bids are due back by Dec. 17.

A bid will likely be selected in January, Gay said.

"By January this project should be ready to move forward and take off," said Gay.

County crews may help with the site work, but it really depends on what kind of bids we get in," Gay said. "We're hoping to get some really good pricing on this project."

He said the county is "happy to be at this point with this project."

Coweta County took some of the final actions it needed to get the $500,000 stimulus-funded grant for the new health department at the board's mid-October meeting.

A public hearing on the grant acceptance was held and the board also approved a contract with the grant writers for grant administration services.

"We're just absolutely thrilled," said Alice Jackson, nursing director at the Coweta County Health Department. "I can't tell you what it means to all of us. It's just wonderful."

"This is really a blessing. It's been a long-awaited one," Ella Hardaway, administrative manager at the health department, told the commissioners last month. "I'm just very happy it is finally coming to fruition. Thank you for your support, all you have done, and all that you are going to do to get us this new building."

The new health department will be built on Hospital Road.

some people dont understand. its just like the B.O.E. you are allocated/ granted x amount of dollars for certain projects by the state and if you dont spend x amount you wont be granted that much the following year or years.then they hire people out of state to do the job? way to go coweta, take care of your own.

It does cost mega money to rehab old buiildings.2 million dollars would probably not cover the cost.Plus are those buildings avaiable? Many of the buildings included in the list are lease properties not even for sell.

Agree with disgusted. Something needs to be done with the huge empty buildings. I know they are not free but surely it would be cheaper than building a new one?

How about puttin the grant in a bid for the old Grant,Wal-Mart,Belk building on Bullsboro rd.The building is there, the parking is there. All that would be needed is to divide up the inside for rooms as needed. The parking lot has plenty of room,no need for new driveways traffic lights or other expenses. I'll bet our elected emperors never thought of this. I will bet this could save the taxpayers aka servants millions of dollars. Does anyone else agree?
