Section of riverbank collapses in Columbus

by The Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — A 900-foot stretch of the Chattahoochee River's bank in Columbus has dropped significantly and, in places, completely collapsed into the river.

The collapse threatens more than 300 feet of the RiverWalk — a walking path along the Chattahoochee — and also some Georgia Power transmission towers. No injuries were reported.

The collapsed section is just north of City Mills Dam, where work continues in preparation for the May 25 opening of a whitewater course on the river. City officials have erected a chain-link fence behind an apartment complex near the collapse to keep people away while workers try stabilizing the riverbank.

Deputy City Manager David Arrington told the Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus that engineers have yet to finalize a stabilization plan, making it impossible to estimate the timeline or final cost of the work.

Scott Bridge Co., a company already doing work on a nearby bridge project, is leading the stabilization effort. Arrington says using a company that is already operating near the site will save the city money because it can use rocks it planned to haul away to stabilize the riverbank.

Richard Bishop, president of Uptown Columbus Inc., said the collapse should have no effect on the planned opening of the whitewater course on May 25 because the area where boats will be put in is well north of that stretch of river.

A portion of the RiverWalk has been closed to the public indefinitely.
