NAACP hosts Atlanta gun buyback event

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta chapter of the NAACP hosted a gun buyback at Turner Field as part of a series of non-violence programs leading up to Martin Luther King Day.

Atlanta chapter President R.L. White said in a statement that the organization was looking to get guns off the street Thursday and would not require participants to present identification to turn in a firearm in exchange for a gift card.

Representatives from local law enforcement agencies were on hand collecting unwanted firearms until about 3 p.m.

Information on the number of weapons that were collected was not immediately available. Before the event, organizers said the NAACP was looking to collect 1,000 firearms.
