The 39th annual "Powers' Festival" with its new shorter moniker is working to attract a new generation to the now almost four-decades-old Labor Day tradition in Coweta County.
Part of the fun is the annual Rising Star singing competition, which joined the festival entertainment several years ago.
Coweta County swells each Labor Day weekend with visitors headed to the annual Powers' Festival, which for 2009 runs Sept. 5-7 at the Powers' Crossroads festival grounds west of Newnan off Highway 34 near the Heard County line. Started by artist Tom Powers in the 1970s, the art festival is held on the grounds of what was his family's plantation that dates back to settlement in the 1700s.
Auditions for the Powers' Festival Rising Star singing competition are being held in three locations before the Labor Day weekend festival. The first round of auditions was held Aug. 1 at the LaGrange Mall. Auditions were at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville on Aug. 8.
The last round will be in Newnan at The Boardroom restaurant off Highway 34 East at 80K Newnan Station from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 22. The auditions are open to the first 30 competitors, and the top 10 at each location will compete in finals at the 39th annual Powers' Festival Sept. 5-7. The overall winner of the competition will win a three-hour recording session at Xcessive Sound studio in Franklin.
Powers celebrates the creative spirit by showcasing the finest in juried arts and crafts. Every Labor Day weekend Powers welcomes more than 150 of the finest artists and crafters from all over the U.S. in 19 categories creating a unique outdoor market that is open only once a year. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
Five Newnan-Coweta non-profit organizations -- Newnan-Coweta Art Association, Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, Coweta 4-H, Newnan Coweta Jaycees and The Pilot Club of Coweta County organize and operate with their volunteers the three-day festival held on the site of the Powers' Plantation between Newnan and Franklin, Ga. For more than a generation, visitors of all ages have been coming to this great annual Labor Day weekend event.
