Annual charity run gets bigger every year

By Elizabeth Melville

The Newnan Times-Herald

A record number of runners participated in Saturday's 2010 Run for Angels and Chicken Q to benefit the Angel's House -- Coweta's emergency safe haven for foster children.

The eighth annual event Saturday drew approximately 600 runners, according to Lisa Shaak, a member of the Angel's House Board of Directors and an event organizer. Shaak attributed the increase in participation to the fact that Run for Angels is "an inexpensive way to support the Angel's House."

Angie Tarkenton, also an organizer, added that this year's event drew a large number of repeat participants. More runners pre-registered this year than in the past. Tarkenton said the high number of repeaters is likely because people really enjoy the event.

The event entailed a one-mile fun run and a 5K/10K, both departing from First United Methodist Church Parish Hall on Greenville Street in downtown Newnan.

Jon and Shelley Clifford participated in the road race with their 16-month-old son, Colin. This was their third time at the event.

"We live here and we're both runners," said Jon Clifford. "We wanted to support a local cause."

"It's a good cause and they have good volunteers," Shelley Clifford added.

"We're absolutely amazed at this turnout," said LouAnne Connell, a board member. "In light of Friday's weather and the economy this year, this is just fabulous."

Organizers also anticipated running out of Chicken Q plates, which are catered every year by Huckleberry's Chicken.

Shaak encourages those who wish to support the Angel's House that couldn't make the fundraiser to visit them online.

"You can always go online and look for ways to support us monetarily or by volunteering," she said.
