Alternative septic system denied for Beaumont Farms

By Sarah Fay Campbell

The Newnan Times-Herald

A request to allow an alternative septic system for a lot in the Beaumont Farms subdivision was denied Tuesday by the Coweta County Board of Commissioners.

The developers had made the same request in July 2007 and were denied. The request was heard again by the commissioners in November.

Two lots in the subdivision can't be used for homes because the soils are not suitable. The lots were created using a faulty soil survey. One lot is a total loss, but the developers had hoped to use an alternative system for the other lot.

Coweta County requires that there be a 100 percent replacement area for a conventional septic system for any building lot.

Commissioner Al Smith made a motion to deny the request. It was seconded by Tim Lassetter. The vote was 4-1, with Commissioner Rodney Brooks voting against denial.

In other meeting business:

n The board approved changes to the home occupations ordinance that will allow commercial food preparation in private homes. No employees who don't live in the home can prepare the food, and the food preparation will be regulated by both Coweta County Environmental Health and the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The food is for consumption off premises.

n The commissioners voted to appoint Norma Haynes as an additional at-large member of the Coweta County Library Board of Trustees.

Until Jan. 1., Haynes was the board representative for the city of Newnan. Newnan no longer contributes financially to the library system and no longer has an appointment on the board.

"The commissioners can appoint an at-large board member," Gay said. "The term that Norma has served with the city doesn't impact her ability to serve a county term."

n The board awarded two grass cutting projects to TWR Lawn Services. The owners of the homes at 26 Canongate Road and 100 Beaubrook Lane have been contacted about the plant growth around the house, but "they have not taken care of the problem," said Patricia Palmer, public affairs director.

The commissioners also voted to place a lien on 240 Saddlebrook Drive. The property has been cleaned up by the county. The owner was sent a bill and "chose not to pay it," Palmer said.
