City hopes new through lane will fix bypass issue

A traffic consultant for the city of Newnan has put together a re-striping plan for the Newnan Crossing Bypass that would add a second through lane for those traveling northward across Bullsboro onto the newly widened section of the Hwy. 34 Bypass/Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard.
There’s not a lot of room to work with at the intersection, and it was formerly thought there wasn’t much that could be done to add another lane.
“The right-of-way is really tight through there,” said Michael Klahr, city of Newnan engineering and public works director.
As it stands, the Newnan Crossing section has two lanes in either direction, but as it approaches Bullsboro heading northwest, one lane becomes a “force right.”
That causes everyone needing to go straight to merge into the center lane, and causes significant backups during high-traffic times. Sometimes, the dual left turn lanes onto Bullsboro sit empty because those wishing to turn left are stuck behind drivers heading straight.
City of Newnan officials and the consultant, Vern Wilburn, are hoping to meet with officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation to see if the plan is workable.
The plan would re-stripe the current “gored” area in between the through lane and the right turn lane to turn it into the through lane. There would then be a short right turn lane, which would begin just past the Chick-fil-A driveway, according to Klahr.
The current triangular gore that shapes the right-turn lane at Bullsboro will also be reconfigured.
The new lanes might not be full 12-foot wide lanes because there might not be enough room. “We’ll just have to take a look at it and see,” Klahr said.
The long delay on the completion of the Hwy. 34 Bypass widening project from Bullsboro to Highway 16 West might work in the city’s favor. New signals for right-turn lanes from westbound Bullsboro onto Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard will have to be added soon, to allow for dual right turn movements onto Millard Farmer.
It might be easier to ask for changes to the intersection before the project is complete.
Wilburn has also drawn out a re-striping plan that would create dual left-turn lanes from Bullsboro for those heading east and turning onto Millard Farmer.
The GDOT will have the final say.
