Convicted felon wrecks before chase begins

A convicted felon with outstanding warrants unsuccessfully attempted to flee Coweta County Sheriff's Office deputies on Wednesday afternoon.

According to sheriff's office Lt. Col. James Yarbrough, around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday Deputy Jack Hollis spotted a Volkswagen Jetta driving more than 20 miles per hour over the 25 mph speed limit on Lake Circle. Hollis flipped on his lights to pull over the vehicle and the driver sped off.

Hollis pursued and initially lost sight of the driver, but he soon rediscovered the vehicle badly damaged and lying on its passenger's side in the woods, Yarbrough said. The vehicle was traveling more than 60 mph when the driver lost control. Hollis inspected the vehicle and saw that the driver had been thrown to the side of the car and had bloody hands and a torn shirt.

Hollis then told to driver not to move, and he was going back to his patrol car to call Coweta Emergency Medical Service. When Hollis turned around, he saw the driver attempting to flee on foot down the woods line. At that time, Deputy Jeff Bugg arrived on scene for backup, and the driver was quickly apprehended, Yarbrough said.

The driver was identified as James Gary Hill, a convicted felon with outstanding warrants. According to Yarbrough, when asked why he tried to run, Hill admitted he had warrants for his arrest in Newnan.

While searching his vehicle, a handgun that was reported to be stolen from Opelika, Alabama, was discovered by deputies. Hill admitted to having the firearm and claimed he had purchased the gun, Yarbrough said.

Hill was charged with speeding, driving without a seatbelt, failure to maintain lane, obstruction of justice, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and theft by receiving.
