Dylan Young was a member of the Explorers program at the Coweta County Fire Department. He was critically injured in a wreck on May 18, but is now home. A fundraiser will be held June 22.

Coweta’s Dylan Young has made great strides since he was critically injured in a motor vehicle crash on May 18.

Young, 17, is no longer in the hospital — he went home Wednesday after spending three-and-a-half weeks at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. But there is still a long way to go.

“He still can’t put any weight on the lower part of his body,” said family friend Erika McKenzie. “He’s going to be doing home heath care and therapy at home.”

He’ll also need a few more surgeries.

A barbecue and yard sale fundraiser to help the family with expenses will be held Saturday, June 22. The event will be held at Royal Baptist Church, located at 70 Mayo Royal Industrial Drive, near the intersection of the Hwy. 34 Bypass and Temple Avenue/ Hwy. 16 West.

Donations are still being taken for the yard sale, and “we will pick it up,” McKenzie said. “We’ve received a really good response so far,” she said.

“We’ve got clothes, household items, just about any and everything.”

The barbecue will be handled by Big Daddy’s Barbecue in Franklin, McKenzie said. Plates will cost $8 and include pulled pork, bread, baked beans, coleslaw, chips and pickles. There will also be a bake sale and drinks.

Plates can be takeout, or there will be tables set up for eating. There will also be free delivery in the Newnan area for orders of five or more plates.

McKenzie said they’re hoping to do as many pre-sales as possible. “We really want to know a pretty good head count by next Wednesday,” so they don’t overestimate or underestimate the amount of food to cook.

“We don’t want to have waste, but we don’t want to turn anybody away,” she said.

Dylan will be on hand for the event, at least for a short time, “to see everybody,” McKenzie said.

Dylan was a member of the “explorers” post at the Coweta County Fire Department, and fire department personnel will attend the fundraiser with a fire engine. Coweta EMS will be there with an ambulance, and Eric Fusan, who responded to Dylan’s accident.

“He has made really good friends with the family, and he has made several visits to Dylan when he has been off duty,” McKenzie said of Fusan.

Dylan suffered numerous broken bones when he wrecked his truck on Happy Valley Circle, including his hips, pelvis, back and neck. He’s had seven surgeries so far.

“His head was fine, and his feet. Everything else in the middle was broken,” McKenzie said. “He has done very well. I think he realizes how lucky he is.”

He had a few setbacks during his weeks at Grady, but “he stayed pretty positive,” McKenzie said. “He maintained a good attitude and spirit. A lot of his friends have visited and kind of kept him going.”

Dylan has health insurance, which is covering most of his medical expenses, but the family has other needs, including needing renovations to their home to accommodate his wheelchair.

Dylan’s mother is a school bus driver, and “I’m not sure if his mom will be able to go back to work when school starts,” McKenzie said.

Dylan’s friends have held other events to raise money, including a car wash last weekend.

There’s also a bank account set up - the Dylan Young Fund at Charter Bank.

Advance barbecue tickets may be purchased at Coweta Fire Station One on Turkey Creek Road, Royal Baptist Church, Sargent Baptist Church, Providence Baptist Church, Happy Valley Baptist Church and Jimmy D’s Salon, or by contacting McKenzie at 678-675-9545 or emckenzie240@yahoo.com.
