Three men were arrested Tuesday after attempting to traffic heroin into Coweta County, local authorities said.

Members of the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit went undercover and set up a meeting with the suspects for a drug deal via text messaging, according to Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough of the sheriff’s office. The meeting was to take place off I-85 on Collinsworth Road behind one of the gas stations around 4 p.m. When the suspects arrived at the location, the CSU sprung the trap and surrounded their 2003 Altima, Yarbrough said. In an effort to escape, the suspects reversed their car and attempted to ram one of the CSU vehicles, doing little damage.

The suspects were removed from their vehicle and identified as Aurelius Madison, Benard Mathis and Kevin Maurice Green. According to Yarbrough, upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered a small amount and three to four capsules of a white powdery substance. The powder was later determined from lab tests to be heroin.

The three suspects were charged for conspiracy to traffic heroin, aggravated assault for damaging an officer’s vehicle, and use of communication facilities for a drug transaction.

Madison and Mathis have both been charged with trafficking heroin in Georgia before, and Green also faces a charge for aggravated assault with a firearm in New Jersey, where he will later be extradited.
