Improvements planned at Coweta intersections

Intersection improvements will be coming to both ends of Lora Smith Road, and to the intersection of Belk, Smokey and Corinth roads.
Coweta County has awarded design and engineering contracts for the three intersection improvements to McGee Partners. MeGee was the low bidder for all three projects.
There may be a traffic light installed at the intersection of Lora Smith and Lower Fayetteville Road, but there won’t be one at Lora Smith and Hwy. 34 East. The Georgia Department of Transportation has previously decided that a traffic light is not “warranted” at that intersection, and state officials have shown no signs of changing their minds.
The Lora Smith improvements will include a right-turn lane onto Hwy. 34. At the Lower Fayetteville Road intersection, there will be turn lanes on each approach for both roads and there will be a traffic signal warrant study, said Tom Corker, Coweta communications manager.
Figuring out the best way to improve the intersection of Corinth, Belk and Smokey will be a little more complicated.
“The extent and method of intersection improvement at Corinth/Belk/Smokey will be determined through a more formal process,” Corker said. The traffic data will be collected and various different intersection configurations will be modeled “to determine which alternates perform best, as well as the various impacts of each alternate,” said Corker.
Once all the data is collected, there will be a public input process and “then a preferred alternate will be selected,” Corker said.
“From there, the project will proceed through the normal design and construction process.”
As for the other end of Belk Road, Coweta County has been trying to make progress on that project for some time, with little success.
The intersection of Belk, Hwy. 34 West and Hwy. 16 West/Temple Avenue includes property of the county, the state, the city of Newnan and Norfolk Southern Railroad. So far, there has been little progress made with the railroad company.
