Man struck by train while relieving himself

by JOHN A. WINTERS

A 50-year-old Newnan man was airlifted to an Atlanta area hospital after being struck by a CSX train going through downtown Newnan.

The conductor told police he was headed toward Birmingham when he saw a man “standing on the edge of the train tracks and appeared to be ‘peeing,’” according to a Newnan Police Department report.

The conductor said the left front steps of the engine struck the man in the leg near Haynie Street.

“I then spoke with the subject that was hit by the train, Rod Sutton, who stated that he didn’t remember what happened,” the officer reported. “Sutton had a large open wound to his right leg around the hip area and was bleeding.”

The officer said Sutton smelled of alcohol and a pint of whiskey was on the ground next to him.

Sutton was treated at the scene and then airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, according to the police report. His condition was not immediately available, although someone who knew him said doctors were able to save his leg.
