Police warn of 'bumping' carjackings

by Staff and Wire Reports

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta police are warning motorists to be on guard for a type of carjacking that occurs after vehicles are bumped in traffic.

There have been at least three carjackings in the city's Buckhead area since Friday, WSB-TV reported.

The most recent crime happened around 11 p.m. Wednesday near West Wesley and Howell Mill roads.

Mark Hutto said he and his wife were stopped at a traffic light when another car bumped him.

"We got a slight tap on the back of the car," Hutto recalls.

The couple got out of their car to see who hit them. There were three men in the car, Hutto said, and the driver pointed a pistol in his face.

"It was real simple: 'Give me everything you got or I'm going to kill you,'" Hutto said.

He gave the man his wallet, he said. That man then took Hutto's car, taking off on Howell Mill Road with the other car following. Hutto and his wife were left standing on the road.

Looking back on the ordeal, Hutto says he made a mistake in getting out of his car.

"You don't think about those things until something like this happens to you," Hutto said. "But you know, I know how I'll handle it next time."

In mid-January, a similar situation happened in Newnan's Avery Park. A 44-year-old woman was carjacked in a similar manner after coming to a stop in her vehicle at the Mumford Drive and Baldwin Court intersection. Another vehicle rear-ended her.

The Newnan Police report of that January incident stated "a black male in his 20s ... approached her and asked her if she was OK. She walked to the rear of her vehicle to see the damage from the accident and when she did, the black male entered her vehicle, did a U-turn and both her vehicle and the suspects' vehicle left going toward the area of Old Atlanta Highway."

Drivers in similar situations should stay inside their vehicles, lock the doors, put on the flashers, and call 911 to report the crash, Atlanta police Maj. Van Hobbs said.
