Winters named paper's general manager


As general manager, Winters will oversee all departments, includ- ing news, editorial page, advertising and circulation. 

John A. Winters has been named as interim general manager for The Newnan Times-Herald, it was announced Wednesday by newspaper President William W. Thomasson.

Winters, a 25-year veteran of the newspaper industry, has worked at the Times-Herald for the past year-and -a-half. 

“Since John has joined us he has continued to improve the quality of the newspaper, not only in his writing but with innovative ideas to better serve our readers and advertisers,” Thomasson said. “We are fortunate to have him in this important position.”

As general manager, Winters will oversee all departments, including news, editorial page, advertising and circulation.

“Our family has lived here for the last 10 years and we consider Coweta County and Newnan our home,” Winters said. “I am honored to lead my hometown newspaper, something every journalist dreams of doing.”

Winters started his newspaper career at The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle. During his years there, he was nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize, the nation’s highest journalism award, for his coverage of the country’s nuclear materials production facilities used for atomic weapons.

He later served as a Washington, D.C., bureau chief; publisher of the Juneau Empire in Juneau, Alaska; general manager of The Grand Island Independent in Nebraska; and director of Morris News Service, a 600,000-circulation wire service serving more than 30 newspapers in 11 states.

“We have an incredibly talented group here,” Winters said. “Our goal is to be the absolute best information and advertising platform for Coweta County.”

Winters and his wife, Corby, have lived in Coweta County since 2002. They have three sons, Caleb, Seth and Levi, attending public schools here and are members of Trinity Fellowship Church.
