Police on lookout for 2 drug suspects

by John A. Winters

Coweta County authorities are searching for two men who abandoned their car containing nearly five pounds of marijuana after a car chase Tuesday on East Broad Street in Newnan.

Coweta Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeff Bugg spotted a Toyota Camry near the round-about at Greison Trail around 2 p.m., said Investigator Edwin Rivera. The vehicle was not staying in its lane and went up on the curb of the round-about.

Bugg turned on his lights and did a traffic stop on East Broad Street. However, as soon as the deputy got behind the other car, the driver took off, Rivera said. Bugg followed the vehicle and attempted to disable it and was successful in spinning it out near the power substation on East Broad.

At that point, a passenger in the vehicle jumped out and fled. The Toyota then headed back eastbound on East Broad and went through the Highland Apartments area and got onto Ball Street.

“The driver lost control somewhere on Ball Street and went into a very deep ditch,” Rivera said. “It was so deep we drove right past it. By the time we got back, the driver had fled.”

Investigators found 4.8 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of the vehicle, which was a rental.

“It’s an ongoing investigation, and we have some leads,” Rivera said. “The passenger is a black male with dreadlocks in his late teens to early twenties. The driver is a short black male, about five feet, four inches tall, with short hair.
