Fleeing suspect caught in Orchard Grove

by John A. Winters

At some point, you’d think people will realize it’s really not smart to try and get into a chase with law enforcement.

Unfortunately for 38-year-old Albert Geoffrey Blum, he learned that the hard way and now faces a host of charges.

Coweta County Sheriff’s Deputy Mac Delarosa was patrolling on Georgia Highway 16 just after midnight Thursday when he spotted a vehicle driving without any headlights, according to Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Yarbrough of the sheriff’s office.

The deputy turned around to stop the vehicle, which appeared to be slowing, but the driver then took off, the colonel said. A chase ensued through the Orchard Grove subdivision, where the deputy finally lost the vehicle because it didn’t have any lights.

Other deputies were called and they finally found the vehicle at a residence.

“The car was missing headlights and it was obvious the car had just been running,” Yarbrough said. “There was the smell of brake fluid and the engine was hot and there was mud and grass all over it from where he had jumped the curb.”

Deputies went to the residence and the father told them it was his son’s car. When Blum was questioned, he said he was downstairs working out, Yarbrough said.

“He was very sweaty and nervous and it just didn’t add up,” the colonel said.

Blum was arrested on multiple traffic charges, but it didn’t end there. During the search at the Coweta County Jail, officers found a crack cocaine on him — so Blum also was charged with possession of cocaine and crossing the guard line with narcotics, according to jail records. Other charges included having a suspended license, fleeing/attempting to elude, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, no headlights, and violation of probation.
