Drug arrest includes child cruelty charges

by Wes Mayer

A woman with five unrestrained children in her vehicle was charged with dealing marijuana following a traffic stop by a Newnan Police officer Saturday.

Around 10:45 p.m., Officer Nathan McNamara was patrolling the area of Newnan Crossing Boulevard and Bullsboro Drive when he noticed a Chevrolet Impala without any tag lights. According to McNamara, he performed a traffic stop on the vehicle, and when he approached the driver, he found four unrestrained children in the rear seat – only capable of seating three people – and another unrestrained child in the front passenger seat.

McNamara identified the driver as Kiosha Lashae Smith, 27, who said they were just coming from a birthday party, and that was why all the children were in the car.

McNamara detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, so he asked Smith to step out of the car. According to McNamara, Smith told him there shouldn’t be any marijuana in the vehicle, and McNamara did not find any marijuana on her person.

McNamara then asked the children to step out of the vehicle so he could search the car, and on the passenger’s floorboard, he found a drawstring-style bag that contained approximately one to two pounds of marijuana along with a digital scale and a wad of 30 unused plastic sandwich baggies.

After this, McNamara arrested Smith for the possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, cruelty to children in the first degree, child safety seat violation and tag lights required.

Smith’s sister and another child’s parents were contacted to pick up the children, and afterward Smith was transported to the Coweta County Jail.
