Parents and children were able to get up close to fire trucks, police cars and other vehicles in order to meet with members of the local public safety departments during National Night Out Tuesday evening.

From 4 to 7 p.m., members of the Newnan Police Department and the Fire Department, the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department, the Georgia State Patrol, Coweta County 911 and others were set up in front of the Kroger and Target shopping centers on Bullsboro Drive for National Night Out. At Kroger, the departments lined up the vehicles in the parking lot, answered people’s questions and let kids climb inside – or, in some cases, on top of – to see what it feels like to be a public safety employee.

The public safety departments were also handing out a variety of public safety information. This included refrigerator magnets with all the useful phone numbers for the safety departments; fingerprint kits, coloring books and other activities for kids; 911 packets with safety tips for children and adults; and items like flashlights, pencils and screwdrivers.

National Night Out is a program started in 1984 by the non-profit organization National Association of Town Watch. The organization is devoted to working with members of the public safety departments and community leaders to promote crime prevention programs and associations throughout the United States and Canada. National Night Out is one of the organization’s largest programs and occurs annually on the first Tuesday of August.

According to the organization’s website, National Night Out “began as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.”
