First day of school in Coweta goes well

by Celia Shortt

Coweta County’s 2014-2015 school year began on Wednesday, as 22,231 students attended their first day of class.

“The first day of school went very smoothly, and it always amazes me how our students and teachers seem to pick back up with classroom instruction effortlessly, even after the summer break,” said Dean Jackson, public information officer for the Coweta County School System.

The first day’s number is just an attendance count, and Jackson hopes to have a better picture of school enrollment in the next two weeks or by the end of August. He said he expects the school district to add 200 to 300 students through the course of September.

Last year’s attendance on the first day of school was 22,340.

For parents who still need to register their children for school, they will need to go to the school system’s central office at 167 Werz Industrial Drive, off Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard. The office can be reached by phone at 770-254-5551.

Students who are already enrolled in a Coweta County school, including a pre-kindergarten class in the 2013-2014 school year, do not need to register again.
