Tax-free holiday for back-to-school Aug. 1-2

by Sarah Fay Campbell

Georgia’s annual sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping will be this coming Friday and Saturday, Aug. 1-2.

Clothes, school supplies and computers, within limits, will be exempt from state and local sales taxes.

The holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Saturday.

Clothing and footwear are tax exempt, as long as the cost is $100 or less per item. The sales tax exemption applies to vintage or antique clothing as well as new clothing, and also includes items such as diapers, uniforms, skates, rainwear, lingerie, neckties, costumes, belts, baby receiving blankets, athletic clothing, athletic pads and supports, hats, gloves, and socks, helmets, and bathing suits, to name a few.

Computers, computer parts and accessories, and software purchased for non-commercial use are also exempt, as long as the cost is $1,000 or less per item. Exempt items include computer microphones, printers and printer cartridges, routers, webcams, cables, computer batteries, blank CDs and DVDs, and the like.

The school supply exemption applies to most school and art supplies with a cost of $20 or less per item. It doesn’t apply to briefcases, envelopes, janitorial supplies, medical supplies, or supplies used for a business.

You can see a detailed list of tax-exempt and non-exempt items at https://etax.dor.ga.gov/salestax/holiday/2014_Sales_Tax_Holiday_Back_to_School.pdf .
