Meeting Tuesday at FUMC for Quilts of Valor project

Volunteers are needed for a project to make quilts for local combat veterans, and a planning meeting will be held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Newnan.

Volunteer Kathy Wilson is spearheading the project. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the church on Greenville Street in downtown Newnan.

The local effort is a product of the Quilts of Valor Foundation’s efforts. While Wilson admits she does not sew, she has a friend who volunteers for Quilts of Valor and was inspired to bring the project to Newnan.

“I was very moved by what they do,” Wilson said. “We want to provide a quilt for every living combat veteran in Coweta, starting with World War II and Korean veterans because of their age. All of them are in their 80s and 90s now,” she said.

In researching and gathering names of local veterans, Wilson has already found 25 living WWII and Korean veterans on her list and hopes to locate more.

“Quilts of Valor can’t provide enough quilts fast enough for us to get these to our local combat veterans,” Wilson said. “We have hopes of having a big celebration for these veterans and their families in the fall, but we need materials and quilters/seamstresses.”

“I don’t sew, but I can cut, pin and iron,” she said. “So, if you don’t sew and want to help we can use you, too.”

She hopes to have at least 30 volunteers to work on the project.

Also needed are donations of 100 percent cotton fabric in red, white and/or blue patterns, quilt batting and backing, or thread.

Anyone wishing to help with the project or would like more information, contact Wilson at 404-790-4831 or email kathyLwilson226@gmail.com .
