The bond between a male mentor and a young boy can sometimes be as strong as that of a father and son.

Henry Dixon has been mentoring Javeion Walden for two years. Walden’s mother passed away in 2009 from cancer, leaving Walden’s grandmother, Deborah Dawson, to become the custodial guardian of Walden, his three brothers and his older sister.

Dixon, a barber and master cosmetologist who also works with children, was introduced to Walden and wanted to help the young boy.

Dawson has seen the impact Dixon has made in Walden’s life. “Javeion has been doing well in school and playing football. Dixon would sometimes take Javeion to football games,” Dawson said.

Walden has been staying on track with his studies, making the honor roll in his fourth grade year at Welch Elementary School.

“I like him pretty good. I enjoy playing football with him,” Walden said.

Dixon has also been an assistant coach in track for nearly 20 years. He has worked with teams from Newnan Crossing Elementary and Arnall Middle School. Currently, Dixon is the community coach for the track team at East Coweta High School.

Dixon was also involved with the Boys and Girls Club when his son was in school, assisting with the track team. Dixon is a certified USA track and field coach.

“I try to influence kids and help them stay out of trouble,” said Dixon.

Dixon and his wife, Linda, who is working on her master’s and doctorate degrees in ministry at Emmanuel Bible College, have a son. Henry Dixon Jr. graduated from East Coweta High School in 2009 and received his master’s degree from Troy University in December 2013.

The clubs Dixon is associated with include the American Legion, the Zodiac Club and the Buffalo Soldiers Advent Post 910. Dixon attends Emmanuel Life and Worship Church in Newnan and Mt. Prospect Baptist Church in Moreland.

According to Dawson, if Dixon can help keep one child in school and off the street, then his work has not been in vain.
