School information found in Smokey Road yard

Personal information about students and faculty from Western Elementary School was found in a ditch at Olmstead’s Smokey Road home on Tuesday. A plastic bag filled with the information fell off a garbage truck, Olmstead said.

The bag split open and papers with information about students – including, in some instances, names, photos and telephone numbers – was found on the ground. The garbage was strewn along a stretch of road about a half mile from Olmstead’s house.

When Olmstead talked to someone from the school about the situation, she was told that these particular documents should have been shredded.

The school works with a private company on shredding documents, she was told. “This kind of information should not be out in the open,” said Olmstead.

School employees from Western Elementary picked up the documents in Olmstead’s yard early Wednesday. A Coweta County School System official is properly disposing of the papers.

It is believed the papers were tossed by a teacher at the end of the year, and none are believed to have contained testing information or other scholastic data about students.
