Two arrested for forged financial transaction cards

by Wes Mayer

Two men were arrested Monday afternoon when investigators with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office discovered they had numerous forged financial transaction cards in their possession.

Around 5 p.m., investigators with the sheriff’s office’s crime suppression unit noticed two men acting suspiciously in the Kroger parking lot on East Highway 34, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the sheriff’s office. The men were making numerous trips into the store, and at first, the investigators were suspicious the men were doing something drug-related. It turned out they were making purchases inside with different forged financial transaction cards, Yarbrough said.

Apparently the men had been going into a number of stores in Newnan, such as Home Depot, Kohl’s, Academy Sports and Kroger, and they were using the forged Visa cards to purchase gift cards, Yarbrough said.

Investigators stopped the two men, identified as Devin Eugene Bassett, 22, and Lamont Chavez Hannah, 21, and they found multiple financial transaction cards in their possession – mostly hidden in their shoes, Yarbrough said. None of the names on these cards matched the cards’ numbers, and they appeared to have been altered.

Bassett was charged with 12 counts of forgery in the second degree, and Hannah was charged with 10 counts of forgery in the second degree, and both men were transported to the Coweta County Jail. Yarbrough said more charges are likely to follow.
