Two girls soccer teams headed to GHSA Final Four

Soccer moms in Coweta County may have received one of their presents a day early.

Both Northgate and East Coweta varsity girls teams punched respective tickets to the GHSA State Semifinals on Saturday with thrilling comeback victories on the road in the Elite 8.

The Lady Vikings battled back from an early one-goal deficit to defeat Heritage-Conyers 2-1 in penalty kicks, outscoring the Lady Patriots 4-2 in the final session to clinch a return trip to the Class AAAAA Final Four. Northgate will host Area 4-AAAAA rival McIntosh, which defeated Northview, the No. 2 seed out of 7-AAAAA.

The rivals also met in last year’s GHSA Class AAAAA Semifinals in a game won by Northgate’s girls in overtime en route to the program’s first state championship.

East Coweta’s girls, meanwhile, overcame a pair of deficits, the latter with five minutes left in regulation to pull out an emotional 4-3 victory over host Centennial to reach the Class AAAAAA state semifinals.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Lady Indians scored four goals in the final 23 minutes of play, twice tying the game before picking up their only lead in the final 27 seconds on a goal by junior Lynnsey Danford.

Centennial took a final lead with 5:15 remaining on a penalty kick before East Coweta answered on a goal by Ashton Rohrschneider to tie the game for a final time.

The Lady Indians awaits their Class AAAAAA Final Four opponent. The team will either host Kennesaw Mountain, the No. 2 seed out of Area 4-AAAAAA or travel to Area 8 champion Grayson on Wednesday.
