Public safety officials converge for Mantracker

by Wes Mayer

Public safety personnel and law enforcement officers from all over Georgia are crowding to Coweta County this week for the 2014 Mantracker Public Safety Conference.

The event organized annually by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office runs through Thursday.

The main venue for the conference is the Coweta County Fairgrounds on Pine Road, but classes are also being held at sites around the county, including at the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office on Greison Trail, the Newnan-Coweta Airport – Whitlock Field on West Aviation Way, and the Newnan-Coweta Firearms Range on Old Corinth Road.

Classes cover multiple areas of law enforcement, such as canine tracking and detecting, firearms training, communication, criminal procedure, courtroom demeanor and more. There are also competitions among the law enforcement officers involving marksmanship and canine patrol teams.

Five training sessions are being held each day, and the conference will end with the “best cookout ever” for participants at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Last year, for the 20th anniversary of Mantracker, around 600 public safety personnel attended the event. The program was initially started by the Department of Corrections Fugitive Squad to train officers to track escaped felons, but budget cuts turned the program over to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. The program continues to expand and add new programs and different training courses each year.
