Man who drove van into church faces charges

The man who drove into a church on South U.S. Highway 29 Tuesday now faces a number of traffic violations, including driving under the influence.

Around 3:30 p.m., Zevulon Green, 41, was driving southbound on U.S. Highway 29 in his 1997 Ford Econoline panel van when he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to turn left onto Oaklawn Circle, according to authorities with the Georgia State Patrol. Green collided with the front right corner of the New Beginning Faith Ministry Church and was injured in the accident.

According to public safety radio traffic, Green may not have been wearing a seat belt and he hit his head on the windshield, giving him a large laceration on his forehead. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Green was airlifted by helicopter to the Atlanta Medical Center.

Following an investigation by Georgia State Patrol troopers, Green was charged with driving under the influence, failure to maintain lane, failure to yield while turning left, no proof of insurance and driving with suspended registration. The damage to the church was minor, according to authorities.
