Authorities investigate the scene where two men were shot on Hill Street in Newnan Tuesday evening. Authorities say the Hill Street incident does not appear to be connected to a shooting Tuesday afternoon on Lovelace Street.

A suspect in the Tuesday evening shooting death of two men on Hill Street in Newnan was taken into custody Wednesday at Atlanta Medical Center.

Police are investigating a separate shooting that occurred on Tuesday but have no suspects. A person of interest in the shooting of a man on Lovelace Street turned out to be in prison, said Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows.

Investigators were hoping to talk to the victim in the Lovelace shooting, Jerome “Spanky” Greir Jr., said Meadows. Grier was taken by helicopter ambulance to Atlanta Medical Center after the shooting and was in critical condition. He is expected to survive.

Though the shootings occurred just a few hours apart, “at present we have nothing to indicate that” the two incidents are related, Meadows said. However, “it’s still early” in the investigation.

The Lovelace Street shooting occurred around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities responded to the Hill Street shooting around 6:45.

The Hill Street shooting suspect, Kamikie Nechez “Chez” Wilkins, 23, was having surgery for non life-threatening injuries at Atlanta Medical Center when the Newnan Police Department discovered he was there, according to Meadows.

Meadows would not specify how officials found out that Wilkins was at the hospital, but he did say “we had a lot of people who talked to us and helped us out."

Darian Person, 23, and Gregory Marquel Anderson, 31, died as a result of the shooting incident on Hill Street. When officials arrived, both men were lying in the street. One was pronounced dead on the scene, while the other died at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

According to Meadows, Wilkins got into an altercation with both Anderson and Person before the shooting occurred.

At least one of the victims exchanged gunfire with Wilkins.

Person made some public posts on his Facebook page in the hours before the shooting.

At 1:51, Person posted that the police were “hot as a MF” on the west side. “I repeat, dey is hot, dey ain't bullshittin’… I’m out.”

Lovelace Street is on the west side of Newnan, while Hill Street is east of downtown. At 2:45, Person posted two words: “street certified."
