Vehicle slams into CVS pharmacy

A woman was transported to the hospital Thursday after her vehicle allegedly malfunctioned, causing it to crash into the side of the CVS pharmacy on Jackson Street in Newnan.
The accident occurred around 12:21 p.m., when the driver got back into her Dodge Grand Caravan in the pharmacy’s parking lot to leave. According to Officer Van Meadows with the Newnan Police Department, the driver and a witness both claimed that, when started, the van suddenly accelerated in reverse, backing onto a small embankment on the side facing the Newnan Crossing Bypass.
According to Meadows, the van then shifted into drive and accelerated forward, running straight into the exterior wall of the pharmacy. The van’s airbag was deployed, the driver opened the door and fell out of the vehicle. After this, the van allegedly shifted back into reverse and rolled backward and to the right across the parking lot, stopping in front of the pharmacy when it drove up the curb.
Emergency responders arrived and tended to the driver, who was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital to check on minor injuries sustained from falling on the pavement, Meadows said. The city building inspector also arrived to check on the integrity of the building and deemed the structure stable.
When the wrecker service arrived to move the van, the crewman drove the van straight onto the back of the wrecker truck, according to Meadows.
