Police: Newnan man shot at brother over beer

by Wes Mayer

A man suspected of shooting at his brother was arrested by Newnan Police officers on Sunday.

Around 9:15 p.m., Officer Anthony Grant with the Newnan Police Department responded to Hatcher Street about a dispute between two brothers. According to Grant in his police report, while en route, dispatchers alerted him that one man had a firearm and was shooting at another man.

When Grant arrived, a man, who turned out to be the victim, ran out of the home, Grant reported. Unsure if the man was armed, Grant drew his weapon and ordered him onto the ground. More people then ran out of the home shouting “He has a gun inside” and “He’s shooting at us.” They were followed by another man, who Grant said was the suspect, Sampson Remond Parks, 29. When Parks walked out onto the porch, the crowd of people told Grant, “That’s him right there.”

Grant said he ordered everyone to lie on the ground, and while waiting for backup, another group of people ran around from the other side of the residence. Grant kept this group back from the scene.

More officers arrived and both Parks and his brother were handcuffed and placed in separate patrol vehicles, according to Grant. Officers then spoke to witnesses and were told Parks allegedly shot at his brother after getting into an argument over some beer.

Witnesses told police that the victim gave Parks some money to buy him beer, but after the victim retrieved the beer, the two brothers began to argue. This escalated to Parks pulling out a 9mm handgun and firing a bullet into the floor. The victim then walked outside, Parks followed him and fired another shot. Witnesses did not see the second shot, but heard it, according to Grant.

No one was injured in the incident, but witnesses said a 9-year-old relative of Parks was inside the home during the altercation, according to Grant. Parks was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and was transported to the Coweta County Jail.
