The former Travel Inn will be torn down to make way for the intersection improvement at Pine Road, U.S. 29 and Ga. Hwy. 16 East.

The Travel Inn, a long-vacant and dilapidated motel on U.S. 29 South, will be demolished to make way for the improvements at the intersection of U.S. 29, Pine Road, and Ga. Hwy. 16 East.

Coweta County has purchased a portion of the motel property as right-of-way for the intersection improvement. Because the motel sits so close to the highway, it needed to be demolished.

Tuesday night, the Coweta County Board of Commissioners voted to have Southern Environmental Services do the demolition work and associated asbestos abatement. The company’s bid was $57,830. Bids were requested from six companies, but Southern Environmental was the only company that submitted a qualified bid. One other company submitted a bid but was disqualified.

Clough Harbour Associates, the consulting firm working on the intersection improvement, has worked with the company before and recommended that the county award the bid.

The commissioners also voted to expand Clough Harbour's scope of work to include the already-completed survey for hazardous materials, which found asbestos, as well as monitoring of the asbestos abatement and demolition.

The old motel will be the only building that will have to be torn down for the intersection improvement, said Coweta County Administrator Michael Fouts. However, several signs in the area will have to be removed. The county bought a portion of the Travel Inn property, and received an easement to complete the demolition. The owner of the remaining property will be maintaining the property, Fouts said.

A preconstruction meeting with the demolition contractor is scheduled for today.
