Cowetans prepare for winter weather

Tina Blevins grabbed some milk Monday at Kroger, in anticipation of Tuesday’s expected winter weather.

Coweta County School System officials closed school for students Tuesday in anticipation of a swath of winter weather expected across middle Georgia, to be followed by frigid temperatures early Wednesday.

A few flakes of snow were seen by drivers in downtown Newnan just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Snow started accumulating shortly before noon.

Coweta school administrators late Monday decided to cancel classes because of warnings of severe winter weather conditions moving into the area during the day Tuesday, said school system spokesman Dean Jackson. All student extracurricular activities were canceled.

All Coweta County school staff members were asked to report as normal Tuesday. For updates on the status of Coweta schools, check The Newnan Times-Herald website at Parents and staff may also check for any postings on the school system’s website at, and are encouraged to monitor local and regional news stations, Jackson said.

Surrounding school systems also announced closings on Tuesday. The Meriwether County system closed school for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Heard County closed schools on Tuesday. Troup County closed school for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Carroll County schools were closed Tuesday, but faculty and staff reported to work. Fayette County schools dismissed classes Tuesday and canceled school for Wednesday for both students and staff. The Griffin-Spalding County School System dismissed students two hours early Tuesday and will be closed Wednesday.

Several Cowetans were found at local grocery stores Monday stocking up on items like milk, bread and diapers.

The storm was expected to bring around 2 inches of snow to a swath across middle Georgia, including Coweta County.

A low of 18 degrees is predicted for early Wednesday, and a low of 12 degrees is expected early Thursday.

Among other cancellations, Coweta County Recreation Department officials said that all senior centers would be closed Tuesday, the Art Building on Hospital Road in Newnan was closed, and all recreation programs scheduled for Tuesday were canceled. Also, Coweta County Transit’s dial-a-ride system was shut down Tuesday. For updates go to The Newnan Times-Herald website at and the county website at
