Unemployment 6.4 percent for November

Coweta's unemployment rate was 6.4 percent and the rate for the Three Rivers region decreased to 7.7 percent in November, according to figures released by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The regional rate was down six-tenths of a percentage point from 8.3 percent in October. The Three Rivers unemployment rate was 9 percent in November a year ago.

The regional rate declined in November primarily because the number of unemployment insurance claims was down and the number of unemployed people fell.

The number of new layoffs, represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits, decreased to 1,736, down by 488, or 21.9 percent, from 2,224 in October. Claims declined in several sectors, including manufacturing and construction, administrative and support services, and trade, transportation and warehousing. There were 2,811 claims in November 2012.

Unemployment decreased to 17,769, down by 1,500 from 19,269 in October. There were 20,975 unemployed in November 2012.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.1 percent, while the Heart of Georgia- Altamaha region had the highest at 10 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November was 7.7 percent, down from 8.1 percent in October. The rate was 8.7 percent in November a year ago.
