Educator Glanton dies at age 102

by W. Winston Skinner

Thomas Abner Glanton, who served his country in World War II and molded two generations of Grantville students, has died.

Glanton, 102, died Wednesday at Savannah Court of Newnan. Glanton was a school teacher and principal for 35 years in Grantville. The Glanton Municipal Complex is named for him and is located in the former Grantville Public School, where Glanton worked for decades.

Glanton Elementary School in Grantville also honors him.

Glanton served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was also active in civic activities in Grantville. His memory and thinking remained remarkably clear well past his 100th birthday, and he was a favorite with visitors to Savannah Court.

The funeral service will be next Saturday, Dec. 28, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Grantville, with interment in Hill View East Cemetery in LaGrange. The family will receive friends at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27.

Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral in Hogansville is handling the funeral arrangements.
