Two arrested for meth possession after speeding

by Wes Mayer

Two men pulled over for speeding Wednesday ended up being arrested when the deputy found meth in their possession, authorities said.

Around 1:47 p.m., Sgt. Jeff Bugg with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office was clocking the speeds of vehicles traveling on the Newnan Bypass, and he detected one travelling 77 mph in a 55 mph zone, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the sheriff’s office. Bugg turned on his lights, pulled the vehicle over around the 2000-block of the bypass and identified the driver, Jason Andrew Thompson, 36, and the passenger, David Allen Loyd, 39.

While Bugg was speaking to Thompson and Loyd, he detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, Yarbrough said. Bugg was given consent to search both Thompson and Loyd, and he found a misdemeanor amount of marijuana in Loyd’s possession, Yarbrough said.

Bugg then searched the car, and he found a container with about four grams of methamphetamine, small plastic baggies, lighters and a digital scale — all the necessary items needed to sell methamphetamine, Yarbrough said.

Both Loyd and Thompson were charged for the possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, Loyd was charged for the possession of marijuana and Thompson received a traffic citation for speeding, Yarbrough said. Both were transported to the Coweta County Jail.
