More than 40 Newnan area children will receive toys this year, thanks to the Christmas spirit of local Freemason members.

On Dec. 7, Georgia Freemason chapters — including the local Annie B. Gibbons Assembly 367a and John L. Martin Consistory 367a — gathered in Macon for the mid-winter Council of Deliberation meeting, said Margaret Thompson, a member of the Annie B. Gibbons Assembly. For a toy drive, attendants were asked to bring two or more gifts to the meeting, and this year, more than 200 toys donated will be gifted to children here in the “Valley of Newnan.”

“We asked if they would give us the toys this time,” Thompson said, “and we chose to give them to Breakaway.”

There are 42 children currently enrolled in the Breakaway Childcare Center on West Washington Street in Newnan, said Alfrieda Thomas, executive director of Breakaway. Thomas said the children at the center mostly come from low-income families and are between 6 weeks and 12 years old. She said the center is open from 5:30 a.m. to midnight, and it provides children with after-school education and summer programs, and snacks and meals are included in parents’ fees.

“It’s always good to reach out to people in the community and work hand-in-hand with them,” Thomas said. “We are excited about our partnership.”

The toys will be gifted to the children during a home-cooked Christmas breakfast, Thomas said. The breakfast will be held at the Breakaway Childcare Center on Dec. 23, and will start at 8:30 a.m.
