Portion of Fischer Road dedicated to Spc. AJ Mills

by Sarah Fay Campbell

A portion of Fischer Road is being dedicated in memory of AJ Mills, who was killed in Iraq in 2011. Accepting the proclamation and road sign for Mills' family is Michelle Hise of Survivor Outreach Services. Presenting the proclamation is Commission Chairman Bob Blackburn.

A portion of Fischer Road is being dedicated in memory of Army Spc. Adrian "A.J." Mills, who was killed on Sept. 29, 2011, in Kirkuk, Iraq.

Mills was a 2007 graduate of Northgate High School. He joined the U.S. Army soon after.

"Army Spc. Adrian 'A.J.' Mills Highway" will be the section of Fischer Road between Palmetto Tyrone Road and Raymond Hill Road. That section passes in front of Northgate High.

According to the proclamation read at Tuesday's meeting of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners, Mills was known for his leadership abilities while at Northgate. In 2005, he helped lead a school-wide drive to gather items needed by the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The drive collected more than 15,000 pounds of clothing, toys, diapers, water, and other items.

Michelle Hise of Survivor Outreach Services was in attendance at the meeting to receive the proclamation and road sign on behalf of Mills' family.

Mills served in the Civil Air Patrol and the Air Force JROTC at Northgate. In the seventh grade, he already knew he wanted to serve his country, it is noted in the proclamation.

Mills was assigned to the 272nd Military Police Company, 519th Military Police Battalion, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade at Fort Polk, La.

On Sept. 29, 2011, Mills was about to go on a military operation in Kirkuk, as part of Operation New Dawn. He was with the 272nd Military Police Unit "Flying Deuce" with the 2nd Platoon "Punishers" when he was fatally struck.

It is stated in the proclamation that "it is only proper and fitting that the life of Army Spc. Adrian Glyn 'A.J.' Mills be celebrated as a true American who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life for his country" and that the "outstanding heroism and bravery" of Mills be honored by the road dedication.
