Neighbors team up to get in holiday spirit

The Rush’s home in Acropolis Court lights up the night sky.

When you drive around the bend of Coweta County’s Acropolis Court, the holiday cheer definitely lights up the night.

A mixture of reds, greens, blues, yellows and purples lights up the street in the back of the neighborhood off Macedonia Road and Pegasus Trace. This year, three homes got into the Christmas decorating spirit, and their yards are filled with scenes of lights, arches, characters and colors.

“The beauty of it is, we all live on a cul-de-sac, and when you come around the curve, the decorations blend together to make a huge display,” said Alec Stewart, who lives at the back of the cul-de-sac with his family.

The Stewarts have covered their home, yard and driveway with all sorts of lights. Over their driveway, Stewart built four Christmas light arches, and he and his kids each decorated their own Christmas tree in their yard. Stewart said he has been decorating for five years, but it looks a little better this year. He still plans to build a ten-foot-wide illuminated star, he said, but hasn’t decided whether to place it on the roof or the lawn.

Two other homes have decorated along with the Stewarts. Sue Bolves, whose home you see first when you drive in, is still setting up her decorations. She plans to add more lights to her front steps and set up a giant candy cane stringed with red and white light stripes.

“It’s all about having fun,” Bolves said. “That’s the most important part.”

The Rushes, who share the cul-de-sac with the Stewarts, have more lights than the Stewarts and Bolves combined. Their yard is surrounded by small, lighted arches, their driveway is covered by five large arches, and decorations cover their front yard, side yard and home.

“They’ve really done a great job this year,” Stewart said.

Stewart said he and his neighbors have teamed up this year to raise money and food for the Coweta Community Food Pantry. He and his neighbors have placed boxes at the end of their driveways where people watching the lights will hopefully donate. Stewart said his daughter, Alexa, plans to hand out candy canes to people when they come drive by their home.

The lights are usually turned on around 5:30 p.m., and stay on until 9:30, Stewart said. The Stewarts plan on turning the lights off on New Year’s Day.

(In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the Newnan Times-Herald is featuring local light displays. If you have a light display you are proud of, contact Wes Mayer at the Times-Herald office at 770-253-1576, Extension 724 or email him at wesley@newnan.com. We ask that you not contact us about a friend or neighbor because we want to have permission from the owner of the display. Some people may not want theirs in the newspaper.)
