Smith Found Guilty On Four Charges

A jury found Dallas Edward Smith, 40, guilty of four of seven charges Thursday night in Coweta Superior Court, and the sentencing hearing was scheduled for Nov 7.

Superior Court Judge Dennis Blackmon presided over the trial which began Wednesday at the Coweta County Justice Center in Newnan.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault with hands, feet, or fists for holding the female victim’s head underwater; aggravated assault with intent to rape and attempt to commit rape for what was recorded on 911 tapes; battery for finger locks; obstruction of an officer for attempting to fight the responding Coweta County Sheriff’s Office deputy; aggravated cruelty to an animal for crushing a kitten causing it to die; and cruelty to an animal for throwing a kitten into the air.

The jury was given the charges by Blackmon and after deliberating for more than four hours Thursday night, ruled Smith guilty of aggravated assault with intent to rape, obstruction of an officer, cruelty to animals and battery. He was found not guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals, and with the jury not being able to reach a decision, Blackmon declared a mistrial for the charges of aggravated assault with hands, feet or fists and attempt to commit rape.

The prosecution, led by Coweta County Assistant District Attorney John Herbert Cranford, brought three witnesses to the stand — the victim, Sgt. Jeff Bugg with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit and Inv. Kyle Vaughn with the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigation Unit. Smith’s attorney, Jerry Pittman, called Smith to the stand to testify in his own defense.
