Man busted for DUI with child in back seat

by Wes Mayer

A motorist was arrested Sunday on drunk driving charges after leading Coweta County Sheriff's Office deputies on a brief car chase - with his child sitting in the back seat.

Just before 7 p.m., Deputy Shane Warren with the sheriff's office clocked a driver speeding around 77 mph on U.S. Highway 29 N. - a 45 mph speed limit zone, said Lt. Col. Jimmy Yarbrough with the sheriff's office. Warren turned on his lights and siren to pull over the driver, later identified as Frank Gabriel Lopez, 36, but the driver kept going.

After about half a mile, a second deputy was able to assist in pulling Lopez over near the 2000 block of the highway near Herring Road, Yarbrough said. Deputies approached the vehicle and found Lopez's 5-yearold- daughter strapped in the back seat and a strong odor of alcohol coming from Lopez's breath.

Lopez took a breath test, Yarbrough said, and blew a reading of 0.205 - more than twice the legal limit. Lopez was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the inf luence child endangering, fleeing/attempting to elude police officers and speeding. Two Glock .40 caliber pistols were discovered, one in Lopez's pants and the other in the glove box, and they were seized by deputies when Lopez was arrested.

Lopez was transported to the Coweta County Jail, and the grandmother arrived on the scene to take the child into custody.
