Threatening call puts NPD, CCSO on alert

A man who made a threat against a business in Coweta County, putting governmental entities in Newnan under security, was identified Friday.

According to a press release from Newnan Police Chief Douglas “Buster” Meadows, the threat actually was made to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office late Thursday. Courthouses, postal facilities and schools in Newnan and Coweta County were subsequently placed under alert early Friday.

Investigators with the NPD were able to identify a person of interest before noon on Friday, and the threat was lifted.

The initial threat was directed over the phone toward an unspecified business outside Newnan’s city limits. According to the press release, the caller did not describe which business, what type of attack or claim any affiliations.

Schools were not mentioned in the threat, but were placed under a heightened sense of alert as a precaution on Friday.

Because of the call, the NPD increased its visibility around retail areas in Newnan, and the Georgia Information Sharing Analysis Center with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was given the report on the telephone call.

According to the press release, the person was identified by investigators with the NPD on Friday.

It was discovered the man, whose name has not been released to the public, was admitted into a mental health facility on Thursday — sometime after making the threatening phone call.

The case is currently under investigation.
