Deadline is Oct. 7 for voter registration

If you want to vote in the upcoming municipal elections and aren't registered to vote, or have moved and haven't changed your address, you've only got two weeks to do so.

The voter registration deadline for the Nov. 5, 2013 elections is Monday, Oct. 7.

There are elections for residents of Newnan, Senoia, Grantville and Moreland. In Newnan, only voters in District 1, on the eastern end of the city, are eligible to vote. The elections in the other municipalities are open to all residents.

If you were previously registered to vote but have moved to a different location in the county, and have not changed your voter registration address, you can vote one time at your old address. If you have moved from one county to another within 30 days of the election, you can vote at your old address, but if it has been more than 30 days, you are no longer eligible to vote, under state law.

Registering to vote or changing your address is easy. You can get a new voter registration form at the Coweta Voter Registration office, located at 22 East Broad Street in downtown Newnan, online at www.sos.georgia.gov/elections, or at various other locations such as public libraries. You can also register in person at the voter registration office, with photo ID. People registering in Georgia for the first time by mail must mail in a copy of their photo ID.

Registration forms must be postmarked by Oct. 7.

If you aren't sure whether you are registered to vote, the easiest way to find out is on the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page at www.sos.georgia.gov/mvp. You can also call the Coweta Voter Registration Office at 770-254-2615. Once you register to vote, your registration remains valid unless you haven't voted in many years.

In Newnan, there are two candidates for the District 1 seat on the Newnan City Council: Dustin Koritko and Scott Cosby.

In Senoia, there are three candidates for the mayor's seat: Suzanne Helfman, Larry Owens, and Don Rehman.

In Moreland, there are two candidates for mayor: Incumbent Josh Evans and Dick Ford.

In Grantville, there are two council seats up for election. Incumbent Selma Coty is being challenged by Dave Riley, and Incumbent Rochelle Jabaley has five challengers: Dee Berry, Sandra Luttrell, Leonard Gomez, Marion Cieslik, and Billy Tucker.
