Downtown Newnan loses power
by Wes Mayer
Around 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, downtown Newnan went dark, and power was out for about a half hour -- including at the Coweta County Administration Building on East Broad Street and the Times-Herald offices on Jefferson Street.
There were unconfirmed reports of power being out on Country Club Road north of Newnan and possibly in areas south of the city.
After three flickers starting about 5:40 p.m., the electricity came back on at 5:59 p.m.
All buildings in the blocks surrounding the Court Square appeared to have lost electricity, and the traffic signals and crosswalks at every downtown Newnan intersection lost power. The traffic signals were totally off -- not even blinking yellow.
According to emergency personnel radio traffic during the power outage, a tree took out a large transmission line near 792 Fincher Rd., which is in south Coweta, south of Moreland. Emergency officials were contacting Georgia Power officials to check on the damage.
