There will be four concrete noise deflecting walls along Interstate 85 in Coweta — and one in Fairburn — under a project set to begin later this year. A 3,322-foot-long wall will be built along the interstate north of Collinsworth Road/Exit 56, pictured above.

The noise walls set to be built along sections of Interstate 85 in Coweta and South Fulton counties will consist of concrete posts with solid concrete panels.

The walls will be built in five locations: at Northgate High School; across from Northgate; at the South Oaks Mobile Home Park near Palmetto; on the northbound side near exit 47 at Bullsboro Drive; and south of Spence Road in Fairburn.

The $6,120,783 construction contract was awarded to Massana Construction of Tyrone in April, and officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation had expected work on the project to begin in June.

However, the contractor is currently working with the Bridge Design office to get approval of the wall design, said Kimberly Larson, regional spokeswoman for GDOT. The approval process should be completed later this month, she said.

Once the design is approved, the concrete posts can be ordered. The posts will likely be built in October, but it will be in November before they are delivered, Larson said.

Casting of the concrete panels should begin in the next month.

The solid concrete panels will likely have a stone-look finish.

Work will likely begin in December on the north end of I-85 and go southward. Crews will then head back north, Larson said. Several posts will likely be placed first, and the panels then slid into place.

The initial completion date for the project was Sept. 30, 2014.

The walls are of varying heights and lengths, based on results of a sound study.

The exit 47 wall will be 15 feet tall and 590 feet long. The Northgate wall will be 4,261 feet long and will range in height from six to 15 feet. There will be a 2,802-foot wall across from Northgate, ranging from 12 to 14 feet high.

The South Oaks wall will be 3,322 feet long and 12 feet high. And the Spence Road wall will be 2,051 feet long and 12 to 22 feet high.
