Big band concert to join Main Street Art Walk
Big band sound will join a display of art in downtown Newnan to usher in fall.
The City of Newnan Cultural Arts Commission has announced a fall concert to be held Friday, Sept. 20 at Wadsworth Auditorium, 25 Jefferson St. Autumn officially begins on Sept. 22.
The concert will join Main Street Newnan’s annual fall Art Walk that evening, making for a busy night downtown.
The concert, billed as “Big Band Explosion,” will feature Night Train, a 17-piece band who will perform an evening of big band, jazz, and swing hits from the ‘40s through today. According to bandleader Perry Peek, Night Train is "a big band that swings in the style of an era when bandleaders were the kings of swing."
Big Band Explosion will begin at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $15 per person.
Tickets are available at Let Them Eat Toffee, Coweta County Visitors and Convention Bureau in the historic Courthouse, Harvest Christian Bookstore, Morgan's Jewelers at Ashley Park, and Bank of North Georgia - Thomas Crossroads branch. Main Street Newnan’s annual Fall Art Walk on Sept. 20 is a free event running from 5 to 9 p.m. in historic downtown Newnan. Artists from Newnan and the surrounding area will have their masterpieces on display in 24 downtown locations. Artists will be available to answer questions and discuss their technique.
Event maps, refreshments and entertainment will be available at various locations.
Participating artists in this year’s event and will feature a wide variety of mediums. Everything from oil on canvass to engraving, pottery, photography, jewelry-making, fiber arts and acrylics will be featured.
— As an added benefit, Southern Arc Dance Theatre will be partnering with Main Street Newnan to feature several unique art installations, which will be set up and actively presented in various locations. SADT is planning to feature a modern dance installation as well as a few travelling oratorical and vocal performances. All performances will occur in random and various downtown locations between 7 and 9 p.m.
"It's a treat to see Newnan begin to emerge as an art destination, and to be able to recognize the abundance of talent and the level of accomplishment which exists here in the art community,” said one of the merchant participants, Corinne Gala, owner and operator of Farrago Gallery.
“The Fall Art walk is a wonderful opportunity to introduce new artists to the public, and showcase the talents of our local favorites.”
